Don’t buy Vista for the security?!

February 5th, 2007 by mb

This absurd article at cnet claims that security experts don’t recommend buying Windows Vista for the security features. The article tries to cast doubt on the effectiveness of new security features in Vista. But I disagree. I think security experts do recommend switching to Vista.

Yes, it is possible to be secure without Windows Vista. I have never had a Windows 2000,  XP, or 2003 system infected by a virus or any other malware other than some minor, and easy-to-fix spyware installations. Even the systems my kids use haven’t ever had any problems. It certainly is possible.

But there are plenty of problems out there and Vista addresses many of the common attack vectors. It will not eliminate problems, but it makes it more difficult to exploit them. Sure, people will find flaws and Microsoft will develop new techniques to address them, but you can’t really expect them to have a perfect defense against future attacks that we haven’t even thought up.

There are many behind-the-scenes fixes in Vista that will greatly reduce the frequency and severity of attacks. IE7 Protected mode alone is a good reason to switch. To recommend not buying Vista for security is just poor advice. In fact, I think it’s more accurate to say that you shouldn’t buy Vista if you don’t care about security.
This isn’t an ad for Vista, but it’s simply lame to not recognize the value of all the new security features that Vista provides.
